Glory's mother will stop at nothing to keep her daughter from worldly temptations…

Glory Bishop lives her life in pieces. At work and with her friends, she reads novels, speaks her mind, and enjoys slow dances and stolen kisses with her boyfriend, JT. But at home, Glory follows strict rules and second-guesses every step. Though she dreams of going to college and living like a normal teenage girl, her abusive mother has other ideas.

When JT leaves to join the navy, Glory is left alone and heartsick. The preacher's son, Malcolm Porter, begins to shower her with lavish gifts, and her mother pushes Glory to accept his advances. Glory is torn between waiting for true love with JT or giving in to the overzealous Malcolm.

When a stranger attacks Glory on the street, Malcolm steps in to rescue her, and her interest in him deepens. But the closer she gets to him, the more controlling he becomes. Glory must eventually decide whether to rely on others or to be her own savior.

Praise for GLORY BISHOP

"Deborah King has written a compelling, thought-provoking novel that engages readers and made me wish the story would never end." -Chicago Writer's Association Windy City Reviews

"If you enjoy complex characters, you'll love this book. From a zealous and abusive mother to a free-spirited best friend much older than Glory, the cast is as engrossing as Glory herself. Deborah King maintains complete control of the narrative, manipulating perception of the characters even as their actions go in other directions. In some ways, you may even find yourself sympathizing with the violent boyfriend.  Deborah King wields the pen in such a way as to grab you by the wrist and pull you along like you're best friends. Glory Bishop is Chicago's answer to Judy Blume!" ---JORDAN EHMANN  - Indies today

"Glory Bishop is an enthralling novel, sad, yet hopeful, written beautifully and masterfully in a way only a true storyteller can accomplish. The characters are complex, and unravelling their motivations, desires, strengths, and weaknesses, will keep readers thinking about this novel long after the last page." ----USA Today bestselling author Kelly Stone Gamble

Glory Bishop is timely and timeless. This book should be required reading for every woman who thinks she must be obedient to be loved. Glory is a protagonist who has a lot going against her, but Ms. King makes her strong, and it is a delight to see where that strength takes her.--- Barbara Conrey USA Today Bestselling Author of Nowhere Near Goodbye

"From the powerful first scene of Glory Bishop to its emotional ending, I was all-in. Deborah L. King is a fresh and compelling voice in women's fiction."--- Jennifer Klepper, USA Today bestselling author of Unbroken Threads

Excerpt:

The radio clock showed eleven thirty at night when JT pulled his car up to the curb in front of a shuttered storefront. A dim light shone in the entry hall that led to the upstairs apartments where Glory lived with her mother. A few mailboxes hung open, and a small wastebasket sat overflowing with junk mail. Glory laid her forehead against the car window, not wanting to move, not wanting to get out, staring at her building’s heavy wood-and-glass door, knowing that when she walked through it, JT would be gone.

She leaned back in the seat and looked at him. He hadn’t said a word the whole ride. The nighttime mist had turned to drizzle, and the shadows from the raindrops on the window looked like dark tears sliding down his face. He still looked like the little boy who told her to close her eyes and say “I do” and then kissed her. Since it had happened in church, it meant they were married, he’d said. She punched him until a teenager stopped her, but he wouldn’t take it back. He’d started calling her Mrs. Glory because that was what you called married ladies.

“Are you sure you’re okay, Miss Glory? I swear, I didn’t plan that.” His whispered question sounded just like the ten-year-old boy who’d rescued her Barbie dolls from the dumpster—the boy who could light up her day with Barbie shoes.

“I’m fine. It only hurt a little. I know you didn’t plan it. I wanted you. I don’t regret anything,” Glory said, though that was a lie. She regretted waiting and being angry at him for two months. She regretted not being able to go with him.

“Are you gonna wait for me, Miss Glory?” His voice was low and unsteady, almost like the thirteen-year-old boy who’d wiped blood from her split lip her after mother had slapped her. He’d put his arm around her and asked her to be his girlfriend. When she said yes, he’d kissed her, split lip and all.

She slid closer to him, took his hand from the steering wheel, and pulled his arm around her. She slid her arm under his jacket and around his waist, basking in his warmth. “Yes. I’ll be right here when you come back.” Glory wished that were true. She prayed that would be true. She desperately needed that to be true as much as she needed him not to go.

“I hafta do it,” he said in answer to her unspoken plea. “I can’t be a good father now. I’m seventeen. All I know how to do is play basketball and Ms. Pac-Man. I cain’t do nothin’ for my son. I cain’t do nothin’ for you.” He held her tighter, trembling, like he’d done an hour earlier when they made love again for real… just like when they’d lain down together… when they touched… when they gasped… when they kissed and they trembled together.

She kissed him again. She tried to reassure him and to thank him in that kiss. She tried to pour herself into his soul in that kiss. Then she laid her head on his shoulder, and they listened to the growing storm as the blue light of the radio clock rolled over to midnight.
