Excerpt
There was
another obstacle we hadn’t seen. It was a sandbag tied to a rope that you had
to haul about 20 feet into the air. Melody and Nick were nearly done. No one
else was around. “This is hard when you’re all wet,” Melody huffed to Megan.
“That’s what
he said,” Megan and Nick shouted in unison, then broke down laughing. Nick
laughed so hard, he lost his grip on the bag he and Melody were hoisting
together. It slipped, and Melody nearly flew into the air with the rope.
“Sorry,
sorry,” Nick gasped as the bag hit the ground with a thud.
I turned to
Megan. “Pull. They’re distracted.”
Melody
wasn’t wrong, poor choice of words as they may have been. Megan and I each
tried the bag before we figured out that wrapping the rope around us made a
difference.
“Wait. I
have an idea.” Megan braced her feet on the railing in front of us and grabbed
several feet higher than I was holding so that she was standing on the rail.
“Get ready to fall backward, okay?”
Before I
could ask, her shoulders crashed into my chest. My arms wrapped around her
instinctively as we fell to the ground with a mutual grunt. At least the rope
broke our fall.
She lay on
top of me for a second and then sat up. I was still on my back, but I heard her
say, “Bend your knees.” As soon as I did, she hooked her feet under my ankles.
Then, she began to haul.
I grabbed
her hips and planted my feet. Even so, the weight of the bag nearly lifted her
up. “Hold on, I’m almost there,” she gritted out as she reached hand over hand.
So my job
was to make sure her ass stayed pinned to my lap.
I probably would’ve enjoyed it more if I hadn’t been so aware that we were slightly beating the other two. Or been mortified. Or both.

Why is Luke neurodivergent?
Luke is depicted as an undiagnosed ASD Level 1 in Just Your Type. In the first iteration of this story, written years ago, he was simply uptight and reserved through most of the book.
Since then, I have learned much more about neurodivergence and how it manifests. I realized that it made perfect sense for Luke to process the world differently. It explains certain compulsions (like the hatred of small talk) and why he holds back from Megan.
Neurodivergence is a difficult thing to discuss because it is so broad and unique. It is important to be aware of the risk of generalizing. For example, Autism is a condition that can be very mild—or completely debilitating. However, understanding that neurodivergence truly is a spectrum can help many people find answers to why they process the world differently.
I based Luke’s character on two people I know who are self-diagnosed as neurodivergent. I deliberately avoided depicting him as having a specific condition. That was not the goal. The goal was to show a man who loved deeply but expressed it differently. Someone who knew he didn’t do things like “everyone else” and often “stood in his own way,” but who nonetheless had found ways to navigate life and make it work for him.
I want to thank the people who inspired Luke. They know who they are. Thank you for loving me and showing me the brilliance of you. I’m a better person because you both helped me look at the world in new, fascinating ways.
I also want to thank Sandy for reading this with an eye on Luke. For coaching me to make him more vibrant and real. And, as above, for loving me and showing me the brilliance of you. I am absolutely better off in this life because of our dear friendship and all I continue to learn from you.
